The plan for this week was to give you an updated progress report on our renovation project after a scheduled meeting with Jeff Thomas, our Design Development Project Manager. But as we’ve learned time and time again on this journey, plans often change, and that meeting was postponed. So instead, I’m going to tell you about the planned décor of my daughter Calliope’s bedroom—which I’m super excited about!
Her room is on the second floor of the house, and because the original bedrooms were tiny (remember it was built in 1900!), we combined two of them to make one large bedroom. Keeping in line with the rest of the house, the décor for Calliope’s room will be period appropriate. We are keeping the original beadboard walls (which, for those unfamiliar, is a type of paneling that was popular at the turn of the 20th century and still in use today). I purchased two beautiful antique iron beds years ago that have been sitting in storage waiting for the perfect opportunity to present itself—and this room is it! For the bed coverings, I found a wonderful artist, Joan Olson, who is based in the Midwest. Joan’s art is creating amazing blankets from old boiled-wool sweaters. I’ve commissioned Joan in the past to make blankets and shams for me—she never disappoints. Her company is The Green Sheep, http://thegreensheep.wordpress.com. I’ve asked her this time to make two matching nautically themed blankets with matching shams. I’m excited to see what impressive design she dreams up this time.
The best feature in Calliope’s room (as is the case with all the rooms in the house) is the ocean view. She loves to read, so we are having a window seat and bookcase built around the window. We designed it so she can sit and read while gazing at the view from either the window seat or while lying in bed. We are also planning to install two sconces from Rejuvenation Hardware above each bed—perfect for nighttime reading!
Calliope is also quite an artist, so we thought it would be great to hang some of her art work on the wall. We’ve chosen a few to have mounted and framed to add the final personal touch to the space.
