Still Feeling Blue?

Written by Jaqui Lividini

At this point, I can genuinely say that I feel great about our progress on the exterior of the house—it’s really coming together nicely. That said, I was recently looking back at my inspiration book from the beginning of the renovation four years ago, and it’s full of shingle houses with blue trim. Apparently, I had forgotten just how much I like blue trim because it has yet to make an appearance in the design. But lately, I've found myself wondering how I could bring that pretty blue color back into the design.

The exterior of the cottage is gray shingle (or will be when the shingle ages). We painstakingly choose a shingle that would weather to the perfect gray (easier said then done I thought maybe a blue door would do the trick in providing a bright pop of color. That could be nice, right? But what shade of blue? We are using paint from the excellent C2 Paint Company and their color palette is vast and offers many beautiful and very distinct shades of blue. We ordered three two-foot-by-three-foot large paint chips to place against the door in order to get an accurate feel of how each shade of blue will look. On our first try, even the deepest shade of blue looked like a light gray in the sun, so we just ordered three more even deeper shades. Luckily, C2 has many colors to choose from so if we don't find something in this next batch, we may just move on to green!
