Preparing For The Inevitable Hurricane

This week I want to discuss the elephant in the room: the dreaded hurricane. As you might recall, the story of the mad renovator originated with a visit from Hurricane Irene. Being that our beach house is on the Long Island Sound, we are extremely vulnerable to all forms of inclement weather with the dreaded hurricane being at the top of the list.

Hurricane season begins every year on June 1 and ends on November 30. This season, we were tested in the form of a credible threat of an incoming tropical depression. We rushed up to Haycock Point from the city to get things in order and that’s when the questions began. 

The house was raised 9ft. so that the storm surge would wash through the garage without causing any damage to the house itself. 

The lattices that surround the garage are actually breakaway walls that easily fall away with any pressure. Sounds easy right? Wrong.

We gave into the lure of space, and started storing things in this under house/garage area. UGH!

Now faced with an impending storm, we found ourselves back at square one. As luck would have it, the storm never came. But the nervousness hasn’t left yet, either. Now we just need to figure out a standard protocol to follow for all future storms—and empty our garage before Hurricane season begins again on June 1. Thankfully, that’s a project for next year.
